An increase in teaching staff salaries in the higher education institutions, better results in the matriculation exams and the external assessment in schools, and adoption of key changes in regulations and a new list of professions are some of the highlights of the Education and Science Ministry's performance report for April-August 2024 during the term of the first Dimitar Glavchev caretaker government.

The Ministry, along with the Regional Education Inspectorates and schools took steps to address the unsatisfactory matriculation exam results in 2023. For the first time, school students were allowed to reschedule an external assessment exam for health or family reasons. School children were given an option to take up to 15 days off per school year with written notification from a parent.

The caretaker government allocated over BGN 200 million for pay rises in universities.

Preparations for the new school year have already begun, the Ministry said in its report. The mechanism involving several institutions for catchment, inclusion and prevention of dropouts in the compulsory pre-school and school age is being implemented. The state enrolment plan has been successfully implemented, with a total of 2,374 classes in the 2024/25 school year, of which 945 (39.80%) are specialized and 1,429 (60.20%) are vocational classes.
