In conditions of reduced inflow to the complex dams, the Ministry of Environment and Water is ensuring a balanced allocation of the available water resource, the Ministry reported on its website on Tuesday. None of the localities with drinking water supply from the 14 dams managed by the Ministry has a water regime, however, there is an ongoing trend of declining river runoff of inland rivers due to reduced water resources and low water volumes in the country's reservoirs.

The prolonged drought, high temperatures, lack of rainfall, mild winter with no spring high water are all factors that lead to lower water volumes in rivers, the Ministry pointed out.

According to the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, the average monthly river flows in June and July were significantly lower than they were in 2023. In June, the total volume of river runoff in the country was 777 million cu m, or 72% less year-on-year. In July, the total volume of river runoff in the country was 454 million cu m, or 50% less compared to July 2023.

Since the beginning of August, river levels and corresponding water volumes in the country have been relatively the same or decreasing. For most of the country, precipitation is below climatic norms.

Compared to previous years, the Ticha, Kamchia, Yasna Polyana, Yastrebino and Asenovets reservoirs have low levels.

The Environment Ministry manages the water use of the country's 52 complex and significant reservoirs, of which 14 provide drinking water. These 14 complex reservoirs are at about 68% capacity. At present, no water regime has been introduced in any of the settlements supplied by the complex reservoirs.

The trend of decreasing inflow to the reservoirs has been observed for the third consecutive year.

Earlier Tuesday, the State Reserve and Wartime Stocks State Agency reported that it will assist three municipalities with bottled drinking water because of the persistent drought and reduced flow at the water sources.
