The head of the National Assembly Delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NPA), Daniel Mitov, hopes that the plenary session hosted by Sofia between May 25 and 27 will send strong messages "first, in terms of a deeper integration of our defence capabilities within NATO, the enhanced NATO presence in the Eastern flank, and the enhanced NATO presence in the Black Sea". He was speaking at a joint news briefing with NPA President Michal Szczerba, here on Monday.
As another important message, Mitov identified the continuation of the integration processes within the military-industrial complexes of NATO member states and the increased and deepening support for Ukraine.
"It is very important to note that, hopefully, the plenary will highlight that, in addition to strengthening military, financial, logistical, and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, NATO will support Ukraine until its victory in the war of aggression that was launched by the Russian Federation," Mitov said.
He also hopes that strong messages will be conveyed about an increase in sanctions against Russia and better sanction enforcement.
"We also hope that the discussions will lead to a greater awareness that NATO member states and the collective West are in a state of war with regard to disinformation. Russia is waging a disinformation war against NATO member states and against NATO as an alliance. This must be acknowledged and taken seriously and ultimately lead to increased collective action," Mitov added.
Responding to a question about a possible NATO military presence in Ukraine, he said, "In Soviet times, those who spread Bolshevik propaganda were called 'useful idiots'. There are such people in Bulgaria now who spread Kremlin propaganda. Anyone who says that NATO is preparing a military presence in Ukraine is part of this propaganda machine."
Mitov said that he is convinced that Ukraine will be allowed to strike military sites on Russian territory, adding that this is the right of any country that is attacked. "The Russian Federation has launched a full-scale and aggressive war against Ukraine, and Ukraine has the right to defend itself, including by striking military sites on Russian territory, which would enable it to defend its citizens, especially from Russian air attacks," Mitov further said.
