site.btaHistoric Town of Perushtitsa Marks 148th April Uprising Anniversary
The southern Bulgarian town of Perushtitsa Thursday marked the 148th anniversary of the April Uprising against Ottoman rule.
The event was attended by Vice President Iliana Iotova, who addressed those gathered: "Perushtitsa and the April Uprising released a huge energy accumulated in the Bulgarian people, they kindled the flame of an anger rankling for five centuries, generation after generation, to light a huge fire that would turn freedom into a national ideal. This ideal we must protect and pass on."
Iotova stressed that many Bulgarian towns are marking the anniversary of the April Uprising these days, but Perushtitsa is notable for its particular blend of tragedy and heroism. In 1876, more than 300 people lost their lives in the town's St Archangel Michael Church after a seven-day siege. Iotova recalled that a mere 150 of the town's 2,000 residents survived the massacre, most of them old people and children.
