National Assembly Chair Rosen Zhelyazkov Monday met with a parliamentary delegation led by Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea Chung Woo-taik.

Zhelyazkov expressed Bulgaria's desire to raise the level of bilateral relations with the Republic of Korea to a strategic partnership. Bulgaria highly values the traditionally friendly relations with the Republic of Korea, based on shared values and similar positions and interests, and hopes to develop their potential, he said.

Bulgaria considers the Republic of Korea an important trading partner in Asia and is interested in attracting Korean investments in promising industrial sectors, Zhelyazkov said, adding that even though the two countries are not geographically close, they can uphold the same values and have the same attitude towards important international issues and security matters.

The two sides expressed their desire and readiness to form a friendship group, which will strengthen parliamentary dialogue and help maintain and develop cultural and historical ties between the two peoples.

Bulgaria values active academic and cultural exchanges, Zhelyazkov said, expressing satisfaction with the fact that the intergovernmental arrangement on cooperation in the field of education and culture was renewed in 2022 for another period.

Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea Chung Woo-taik stressed that Bulgaria is a friend of the Republic of Korea. The two countries have well-established 30-year diplomatic relations and this visit underlines the will to deepen bilateral dialogue, he noted.

The official guest expressed his country's desire to be supported in its initiative to host the Expo 2030 World Expo in Busan.
