The greatest victories can be achieved peacefully, said Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov at the ceremony to celebrate the 138th anniversary of the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria with Eastern Rumelia in Sofia on Wednesday.

"If we use the methods of diplomacy in the right way, if we find allies, if we know what we are fighting for together and have a common goal, we can achieve them peacefully," he pointed out.

"Even then we will have to defend, perhaps with blood, what we have achieved. Because the Bulgarian reunification would not have been successful if the Bulgarian army had not managed to repel the aggressor that came from the west at the necessary moment," Denkov added.

"We must look at our ideals, our interests and not submit to others," the Prime Minister stated. He argued that the historical facts show that Bulgaria's former liberator became the biggest opponent of the unification.

"Unification is a word that on the one hand reflects a historical act that changed Bulgaria's destiny and on the other is a symbol of what Bulgarian society needs if it wants to develop," Denkov noted. "When we talk about unification and we want to unite, we should clearly define the goals and common tasks that lead us forward to the future as a prosperous country and not look back and long for a past that will never return," he added.

Deputy Prime Minister Mariya Gabriel and Vice President Iliana Iotova wrote congratulatory addresses on the occasion on Facebook.
