The local elections will lead to escalation of political confrontation, but this should not endanger the legislative process, said Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria Co-floor leader Atanas Atanasov on Friday in a statement on behalf of the parliamentary group at the start of the Parliament's autumn session. He pointed to the adoption of constitutional amendments and reform of the justice system as a top priority "so that the law can be applied equally to all.

Atanasov noted that the public attention was turned to the proposal to change the national holiday from March 3 (Liberation Day) to May 24 (Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slavonic Literature Day) but stressed that this was not the core of the bill - it was the need to radically change the rules under which the Bulgarian justice system operates, he explained.

He described the adoption of the State Budget as another important issue before the Parliament. The DB co-leader pointed out that it is already being worked on by the Finance Ministry.

Atanasov defined the country's accession to Schengen and the euro area as the main foreign policy issues.

"The war in Ukraine is a very significant challenge and we are only 300 km away from it. It is very important to have a functioning security system by increasing the capacity of the bodies related to national security," he noted.

Atanasov referred to the election of the Denkov-Gabriel cabinet as a compromise, driven by the danger that the political crisis in Bulgaria would turn into a decline of the institutional system because of the frequent elections.

"The most important decision that we all took together is to create a regular government to break the caretaker government that has been in place for too long," Atanasov said.
