Some 42% of adults in Bulgaria would not change their attitude towards a relative if they turned out to be LGBT compared with 36% that would react negatively, an Alpha Research survey shows, as reported by the GLAS foundation on Friday.

The public opinions of Bulgarians on the issues of LGBT, family and gender continue to be dominated by traditional stereotypes but albeit slowly, the skeptical attitudes are changing, mainly because of personal experience and contact with the topic.

The nationally representatives survey was carried out by Alpha Research between April 12 and 20 among 1,000 adult respondents across the country. It has been commissioned by the GLAS foundation and is funded by ILGA-Europe under the project Bursting the Bubble in partnership with the foundations Bilitis and Single Step.

Some 43% of adults believe they are tolerant towards LGBT people, against 46% who are not. One in three says that they would be comfortable working with a LGBT person, and 34% back the idea for public incitement of hatred towards :LGBT people to be criminalized.
