There were various attempts at provocation, we behaved as required by responsible political behavior, the way statesmanship requires, caretaker Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev said in the southwestern city of Blagoevgrad. He was speaking several hours after the Bulgarian delegation he headed laid a wreath at the grave of Gotse Delchev in the courtyard of the Church of the Ascension in Skopje to mark the revolutionary’s 151st birth anniversary.
"The declarations were that all Bulgarian citizens would be allowed unhindered to pay tribute to Gotse Delchev's memory, but this did not happen. However, I repeatedly told my colleague [North Macedonia's Interior Minister Oliver Spasovski] that such an approach does not demonstrate the trust and respect that the two nations owe each other," Demerdzhiev told journalists in Blagoevgrad. Such an approach is not the way the Republic of North Macedonia declares it is headed, he added.
Demerdzhiev has repeatedly called that as politicians both sides should demonstrate a different path, namely the path of mutual trust and respect, which will take Bulgaria and North Macedonia where they declare they are headed and where this country is headed - the path of the European family.
In Blagoevgrad, Demerdjiev paid a floral tribute before the Delchev Family Memorial in the courtyard of the Presentation of the Theotokos in the Temple Church.
