On this date in Bulgarian history:

1877: Ottoman troops led by Osman Pasha surrender at end of Siege of Plevna during Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878).
1878: Sofia Public Library (today's National Library) is set up.
1891: Sixth National Assembly adopts first Public Education Act after the liberation from Ottoman rule in 1878, thus creating legal basis for compulsory free education for all children, regardless of religion and nationality.
1998: Death penalty is abolished.
1999: European Council invites Bulgaria to start EU membership talks.

- National Day of Burkina Faso: Republic Day (1958).

1868: Revolutionary leader Vassil Levski starts his first tour of Bulgaria from Constantinople.
1879: Diplomatic relations are established with Belgium at the level of diplomatic agencies; severed in 1915, restored in 1920; severed again in 1941 and restored in 1947 at legation level. Promoted to embassy level on November 6, 1964.
1896: First cinematographic projection is conducted in cafe of Bulgaria Hotel in Sofia.
1947: Government headed by Georgi Dimitrov is formed.
1996: National Association of Municipalities holds constituent meeting.
2005: President Georgi Purvanov pays first state visit of a Bulgarian head of State to Ireland.
2006: Bulgarian Embassy unveiled in Podgorica after Montenegro declares independence.
2007: Parliament adopts State Agency for National Security Act.
