More than 30% of pregnancies in Bulgaria end in abortion, Prof. Asen Nikolov, head of the Delivery Clinic at Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment in Obstetrics and Gynecology "Maichin Dom", said on Friday, referring to data from the National Statistical Institute. The peak of abortions in Bulgaria was in the 1970s, when the country registered 150,000 against 130,000 babies born in a single year.

Over the past 40 years, abortions have outnumbered births in Bulgaria, the doctor said, adding that after 2000 the birth rate began to rise. Bulgaria ranks third in Europe after Armenia and Georgia in number of abortions performed on women of childbearing age (15 to 49), according to Eurostat.

There were 1.5 million women of childbearing age in Bulgaria in 2017 and 1.4 million in 2021. The reasons for the decline are population aging and migration.

Bulgarian regulations dictate that a woman can terminate her pregnancy at her own will before week 12 of the gestational age, regardless of whether the woman has already given birth before, said Nikolov.

Prof. Ivan Kostov, Executive Director of "Maichin Dom" said that 3% of all women of childbearing age in Bulgaria take oral hormonal contraceptives, which is nearly 8-10 times lower compared to average rate across the EU Member States.
