Leaving Bulgaria out of the Schengen area is not in the interest of the European Union and does not contribute to the common efforts to tackle security challenges and the severe economic crisis in Europe, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev said during a telephone conversation with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, Radev's press secretariat said here on Wednesday.
Radev recalled that the European Commission has repeatedly confirmed Bulgaria's readiness to join Schengen and this country expects support from all of its EU partners. The Commission's latest protection inspection of the external European borders, which took place in October 2022 at Bulgaria's invitation, also confirmed the country's readiness to join Schengen. Support was also expressed by the European Parliament, the Bulgarian Head of State further said.
Bulgaria expects the EU institutions and member states to be guided by the established criteria for Schengen membership and not by other considerations, Radev urged.
