In an  official position sent to the media on Friday, the decision-making Executive Bureau of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) stated that they were against spending public funds on the purchase of Gripen aircraft.

"It is not the job of a caretaker cabinet to negotiate and commit Bulgaria long-term to such contracts. There is already an elected parliament, and only it can make such decisions," said the BSP. The party opposes additional spending on fighter jets.

"The country is in a severe socio-economic crisis, high inflation, poverty and growing inequalities," the position reads, adding: "To us, what is most important is supporting families, increasing incomes, and stabilizing the economy."

The BSP will vote against such a decision if it is submitted to the future National Assembly.

On Thursday, asked by a reporter whether the caretaker cabinet had approached Sweden for the purchase of 10 Gripen aircraft, President Rumen Radev said that Bulgaria needs an intermediate fighter platform so as to perform its air policing mission uninterrupted.

The President also said that "letters were sent, meetings were held, initial information was received about platforms from the US, from France, from Sweden, from the Netherlands, from Israel". He explained that second-hand planes are being considered.

"In order to ensure that the Bulgarian Air Force can continue to carry out its air policing assignments, the Ministry of Defence has sent a request to Sweden, France, Israel and the US to submit an offer for the lease or purchase of aircraft," the Ministry confirmed on Thursday.
