Ombudsman Diana Kovacheva said on BNT that about 300,000 pensioners will remain below the poverty line, which is why she turned to the Minister of Labour with a recommendation that the poverty line should be at least BGN 504 before the end of this year.
On September 21, the cabinet decided that the poverty line in Bulgaria in 2023 will be BGN 504. Its value will increase by BGN 91 or by 22% compared to the current 2022.
According to Kovacheva, winter will be difficult for many people. She predicts that there will also be difficulties for people with disabilities and those who rely on social assistance. According to her, the projected poverty line is not sufficient because it does not reflect the small consumer basket.
The Ombudsman said that there must be compensation for gas users, as well as for people who heat with wood and pellets. She explained that about 40% of people use solid fuels for heating, noting that the price of firewood and pellets has increased by nearly 70%, which is several times more than the annual inflation rate. On Friday, the ombudsman referred the Commission on Protection of Competition with a request to check why the supply of firewood is limited and why the prices are rising.
