Justice Minister Krum Zarkov met with Lukasz Kautsky, the ambassador of Czechia, which currently holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Justice Ministry said on Monday on its official Facebook page. Zarkov and Kautsky discussed Bulgaria's future accession to the Schengen area.
The two sides shared the view that Bulgaria fulfills all the criteria for Schengen membership and it is entirely realistic that a political decision on the matter be made during the Czech Presidency of the Council. The timing is appropriate in view of the reform carried out in the EU in this area and the absence of objective obstacles to accession.
The two politicians expressed their belief that the Union can only be strong when all member states fully participate in the European mechanisms guaranteeing the basic freedoms in it.
Minister Zarkov added that bills are being actively worked on in all areas monitored within the rule of law mechanism, which will lead to the full implementation of Bulgaria's international commitments. During the meeting, he presented his main priorities for the coming months.
Ambassador Kautsky expressed full support for the expressed priorities and especially for the presented intentions of the Bulgarian side in connection with the accession to the Schengen area and promised close cooperation and assistance of the Minister of Justice in dealing with the important challenges he is facing.
