site.btaGERB Must Return to Being Strong Right-Wing, Conservative Party, Leader Borissov Says

Speaking during a meeting with GERB representatives from Plovdiv Region in Parvomay on Friday evening, party leader Boyko Borissov said that GERB must return to being a strong right-wing, conservative party again. “GERB must return to what we used to be – a strong right-wing, conservative party. Right-wing politics means respecting people who work and businesses that produce, invest and create jobs. There can be no strong State without a strong economy. There can be no high incomes without successful businesses,” Borissov added in a Facebook post.

“I stressed that GERB must defend low taxes, fiscal discipline, private property, entrepreneurship and predictable rules. We will work for less bureaucracy and administrative harassment, and for greater freedom for people who can and want to work,” Borissov noted.

According to the GERB leader, there should be social policy for those who genuinely need support. “But the best social policy remains education, skills, a functioning economy and rising incomes,” he stressed.

“Conservatism for us in GERB also means something else – family, responsibility, order, security, respect for all ethnic groups and their traditions, and respect for the state. I also explained that GERB does not need to nominate a presidential candidate at any cost just to prove itself – we have won more than 20 elections. For us, the presidency should guarantee stability and defend Bulgaria’s European course. When we are convinced that there is a candidate who can shoulder this responsibility, GERB will make its decision,” Borissov said.

On September 13 in Pazardzhik, Borissov said that he would not vote for President Iliana Iotova, describing her as his ideological opponent. He noted that he would not vote for many other candidates either and had founded GERB to defeat the Bulgarian Socialist Party. No one had yet approached GERB for support in the presidential race, he added.
