A total of 162.2 million passengers travelled on domestic and international routes through Turkish airports between January and August 2025, Turkiye’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloglu, said Saturday in a written statement quoted by Turkish media outlets. 

The figure includes arriving, departing, and transit passengers.

In August alone, Turkish airports handled 101,329 domestic and 104,661 international flights carrying both passengers and cargo - representing a 12.9% increase compared to the same month in 2024, Uraloglu noted.

Passenger numbers for August reached some 10.5 million on domestic routes and around 17.2 million on international routes. Including transit passengers, the total reached 27,678,020, marking a 9.7% increase year-on-year.

From January through August, Turkish airports recorded 654,086 domestic flights, 616,853 international flights, and 1,649,035 total aircraft movements, including overflights and transits. This represents a 7% increase in overall air traffic compared to the same period last year.

Istanbul Airport maintained its position as the busiest in the country, serving 55.3 million passengers.

In August, the airport handled 12,362 domestic and 38,833 international flights. It served 8,296,156 total passengers, including 1,869,480 on domestic routes and 6,426,676 on international routes.

Over the first eight months of the year, Istanbul Airport served 11,823,296 domestic and 43,427,489 international passengers. 

In August, Istanbul's second-biggest airport, Sabiha Gokcen, served a total of 4,699,989 passengers, of which 2,115,142 were domestic and 2,584,847 were international. In January–August 2025, the passengers served totalled 31,203,932. 

Together, Istanbul's two airports served 12,996,145 passengers in August, meaning virtually one in two air travellers in Turkiye flew via an Istanbul airport that month. Their combined total for January–August reached 86,454,717 passengers, the Minister said. 

Airports in Turkiye’s major tourist destinations served a total of 42.2 million passengers, with Izmir Airport leading the group, followed by Antalya, Mugla Dalaman, Mugla Milas-Bodrum, and Gazipasa Alanya airports.
