The Parliament of North Macedonia on Sunday elected a technical government headed by Talat Xhaferi, until now leader of Parliament.
After an almost two-hour sitting, which involved statements by the parliamentary groups' floor leaders, the third technical government in the country's history was elected by a vote of 65-3, with no abstentions, and was sworn in. The MPs of the opposition VMRO-DPMNE party were in the chamber but did not vote for the government, in which they have two ministers.
Talat Xhaferi became the first ethnic Albanian to serve as Prime Minister of North Macedonia.
The first two technical governments of North Macedonia served in January 2016 - May 2017 under Prime Minister Emil Dimitriev and in January-August 2020 under Oliver Spasovski. The main task of a technical government is to prepare the country for the next parliamentary elections. This time, the elections are scheduled for May 8, 2024.
