In this drastically changed geopolitical situation, our region needs a new approach to ensure its security and stability, said caretaker Bulgarian Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said during the 16th Balkan Countries Chiefs of Defence Conference which took place in Sofia Thursday.

The topic for 2023 is connected with the cooperation between NATO and the European Union (EU) - "Regional military connectivity and military mobility as a focus of the Balkan partnership in search of innovative ways of integration and cooperation".

Consolidated cooperation and collaboration in the implementation of strategic projects has important multiplier effects, contributing to security and stability, as well as to the strategic sustainability, economic development and prosperity of the Balkan countries, Stoyanov said.

He added that the joint efforts of the Balkan countries should be aimed at improving interconnectivity and expanding energy, transport corridors. Minister Stoyanov noted that increasing connectivity in the field of transport, energy, digitalization especially along the North-South, Central and Eastern Europe axis is also important.

Cooperation should be oriented towards the implementation of concrete projects for the development of infrastructure links between our countries, which will improve the economic efficiency, competitiveness and balance in the development of the region, the Minister added.

He said there was also potential to achieve greater defence connectivity. In addition to military mobility, military education, training, and troop and force training activities are of interest, he said. In his view, joint acquisition, maintenance and use of weapon systems as well as modernization of training infrastructure could also be pursued.
