On May 18, Sofia is hosting the 16th Conference of the Chiefs of Defence/General Staffs of the Balkan Countries, the Defence Ministry said in a press release Wednesday. The conference will be held at the Boyana Residence.

Caretaker Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov will address the participants. President Rumen Radev has been invited to attend as Commander-in-Chief of the Bulgarian Armed Forces.

The Bulgarian Chief of Defence, Admiral Emil Eftimov, will welcome his counterparts from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Montenegro, the Republic of North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, and Turkiye. Also to arrive in Bulgaria is General Robert Brieger, Chairman of the EU Military Committee, and Lieutenant General Stephen Kelsey, Deputy Commander of Allied Joint Force Command Naples. Eddy Liegeois, head of the Transport Networks unit at the European Commission's  Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport, will be guest lecturer at the forum.

The participants in the 16th Conference will discuss regional military connectivity and military mobility as a focus in the partnership in the Balkans in search of innovative ways for integration and cooperation. The working sessions will discuss matters of common interest for the participating countries' armed forces.

The Balkan Countries Chiefs of Defence/General Staffs (CHODs) Forum was launched in 2007 as an initiative aimed at promoting stability, cooperation, and well-being of the countries in this region. The regional military cooperation includes exchange of information on security topics and potential threats to the region, organization of joint exercises, courses, and trainings as well as seeking opportunities to broaden the common activities.
