Greek authorities have urged residents and tourists to take precautions as the country enters a period of hot weather, with temperatures expected to reach 40C in some places in the coming days, the online edition of the newspaper Kathimerini reported on Thursday.
Temperatures in the mainland are expected to reach 38C on Thursday, before rising further on Friday, when temperatures of 39C - 40Care forecast in some places. Scattered showers are possible in the mountainous regions of western and northern Greece, the publication also states.
Authorities are advising people to avoid sun exposure and intense physical exertion during the hottest hours of the day.
In the Attica region, which includes Athens, temperatures are expected to reach 36C, and 35C in Thessaloniki. In the Ionian Islands, maximum temperatures will be around 33C - 34C, compared to 31C - 32C in the Cyclades and Crete and up to 36C in the islands in the eastern Aegean Sea and the Dodecanese.
