Andrey Ivanov is an analyst with the Russian independent news site News.ru. He has 16 years of experience as a journalist. In his opinion, Russian journalism today functions at a very good level.At News.ru, our creativity is encouraged, within the framework of our code of conduct, of course. For example, we have provisions on how to make the most of our working hours, how to cover various topics, and so on. Our media boasts a very high level of editorial independence. There are taboo subjects which are not set by our editorial policy, but by the legislation of the Russian Federation. For instance, we have no right to promote racial differentiation, fuel conflicts between nations or religions, or take sides in such arguments. As provided by the Russian laws, we are not to promote the activities of George Soros, nor terrorism, nor extremism. The regulations from our management on how to present a certain topic should not be seen as censorship. This has nothing to do with ideology, but rather with the way of presenting the facts. I am grateful for the advice from our management in such cases, says Mr. Ivanov. In News.ru, we always try to be politically correct: we abide by a principle of the masons Ц people do not argue all at once, but rather each person has a say, taking turns. It is very difficult to tell who is right or wrong nowadays. Since our media is an Internet portal, our main competition comes from the online media. Mr. Ivanov believes that fake news has now become a journalistic genre in its own right. This approach makes people think twice about the current situation, but on the other hand fake news is produced with the sole purpose of manipulating public opinions, which could be a disaster. The real threat to professional journalism, as I see it, is the purposeful use of modern technical platforms. The competition now is not among the various media, but among the news search engines that direct people to a certain content. Mr. Ivanov does not know the owner of News.ru. Even if I knew who that person is, I wouldnТt tell; itТs all the same to me anyway, adds Mr. Ivanov.
