Underwater Fortress
Discovered near
St Thomas Island
Bourgas, on the Black Sea, August 19 (BTA) - An unknown fortress has been discovered in the area of St Thomas Island during an underwater expedition of the National History Museum, Sozopol Municipality said in a press release Sunday.
The expedition is funded by the Ministry of Culture.
The team have found two sites with pieces of pottery, some of which presumably dating back to the first century B.C. At the first site, which is located southwest of the island, the archaeologists found what is believed to be a Thracian fortress wall. At the other site, located at a depth of 9 m to the south of the island, the team uncovered a piece of an amphora from the Late Antiquity and well-processed limestone blocks aimed for construction works on the island.
The archaeologists firmly believe that St Thoman Island used to be a peninsula in the past.
The underwater expedition is a continuation of the exploration works on the island in June 2018, during which the team located and partially excavated a Thracian sanctuary, structures from the Late Antiquity and a medieval monastery.
