Expert Expects Less Wheat and More
Corn and Sunflower in This Year's
Harvest Campaign

Sofia, August 29 (BTA) - Radoslav Hristov of the National Association of Grain Producers in Bulgaria told BTA that he expects less wheat and more corn and sunflower in this year's harvest campaign compared to last year. The official figures for the winter crops are still due but it is already clear that the wheat harvest will be some 20 per cent lower than last year.

The total wheat output is expected at some 5 million tonnes and the decrease from last year is primarily due to the wet weather in July, he explained.

It is the quality rather than the quantity that is a problem, said Hristov. The bread-grade wheat will be below 25 per cent of the entire output. "I would even say that 15 per cent is more realistic, which makes less than 1 million tonnes of wheat with good bread-making qualities."

The domestic market is already reacting to the negative forecasts and the price of bread-grade wheat has increased to 0.40 leva/kg.

Hristov says, though, that the situation in Bulgaria is far from dramatic, especially considering the European Commission's forecast for a weak wheat crop across the EU.

"What I would urge all traders and producers to do, especially with their good wheat, is to ask a normal price and then the wheat will stay here rather than get exported," Hristov said.

He would not say what "normal price" would be.

He also said that the rain has affected positively the corn and sunflower fields. RY/LN/
