Sofia, August 30 (BTA) - The leadership of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) has terminated the mandate of the head of the BAS Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, Prof. Hristomir Brunzov. He told BTA that he is not aware of the official motives but he had seen the decision coming because of his support for the protests of weathermen with demands that the Meteorology Institute leave the BAS.
Meteoroligists' key complaint is that the BAS budget is inadequately distributed by the BAS leadership and that they don't get enough money for their work.
Prof. Brunzov said that the entire Institute leadership plans to resign as a sign of solidarity with its director.
He also told BTA that his first term in office as institute director expires on November 18, 2018 and that he is eligible for re-appointment as all BAS institute directors.
The decision of the BAS leadership comes a day after fresh protests by the Institute staff. Following a meeting between the protestors and the government, Education and Science Minister Krassimir Vulchev said that "exit from BAS emerges as a more realistic, sustainable and acceptable option" for the Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology.
