October 2 (BTA) -  Ten countries on
the Danube are starting a 3.67 million euro cooperation project
aimed to lower the risk of flooding, said Tuesday the
Pleven-based Danube Region Basin Directorate which is a lead
partner in the project. Called Danube Floodplain, the project
will pool the effort of the participating countries to minimize
the risk of flooding by restoring the floodplain of the Danube
and its tributaries.

The opening meeting for the project was held in Bucharest.

The project will be on for 30 months.

It will use financial support from the Danube 2014-2020
Programme and will be implemented by 18 partners and four
associated strategic partners from Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia,
the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia,
Romania and Serbia.

The project is expected to improve cross-border coordination in
water management and help develop a common methodology for
lowering the risk of flooding by using alternative measures for
restoring the floodplains, which in turn will improve the
protection of biodiversity and enhance the benefits from it.
