site.btaTourism Minister Presents Project Designating Seven Spa Destinations in Bulgaria

October 4 (BTA) - A discussion was held Thursday on a
Tourism Ministry project designating seven spa tourism
destinations in Bulgaria. Addressing the participants in the
event, Tourism Minister Nikolina Angelkova said that in Europe
Bulgaria comes second after Iceland in terms of mineral waters
reserves. This country has more than 600 sources of mineral
water, with 1,600 springs with total diurnal output of more than
 270 million litres. Of these, mineral water reserves that are
exclusive state property number 102, with aggregate output of
about 5,000 l/sec. Springing from very deep in the ground, the
water in these sources is extremely pure. Angelkova said that
Bulgaria's rich natural givens, among them climate and mineral
waters, provide a good basis for developing medical, spa and
wellness tourism.

Bulgaria has 54 balneological resorts whose popularity among
foreign holiday makers is growing. Also, 113 balneological, spa
and wellness centres have obtained certifications, and four more
 have been approved to be issued certificates.

The project for seven balneological and spa destinations was
developed with the contribution of 50 municipalities which have
