Protesting Mothers of Disabled
Children Spend Night in
Tents in Front of Government's Building

Sofia, October 11 (BTA) - The protesting mothers of children with disabilities spent the night of Wednesday to Thursday in tents in front of the Council of Ministers' building, ahead of Thursday's discussion on the People with Disabilities Bill by the National Council for Integration of People with Disabilities. The protestors' goal was to demonstrate to the power holders that they will not give up on the reform in the sector and want it to be carried out in full.

The protest began on Wednesday evening, when the mothers of disabled children blocked Dondukov Boulevard in front of the Council of Ministers' building.

On Tuesday, Labour and Social Policy Minister Bisser Petkov, Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov, National Ombudsman Maya Manolova, and representatives of people with disabilities signed an action plan setting deadlines for the adoption of several bills concerning disabled people, drafted by the Government. However, the mothers of disabled children demand guarantees also by the Prime Minister and the National Assembly that the reform in the sector will be carried out. They want the new legislation to be adopted by Christmas.

According to the action plan, the People with Disabilities Bill should be tabled in Parliament on October 19. The MPs will debate jointly on it and a bill on personal care so as to effectively distribute the 150 million leva more for the people with disabilities in 2019. These bills are expected to be adopted no later than mid-December.
