Protests across
Bulgaria
over High Fuel Prices

Sofia, November 11 (BTA) - People protested in all parts of Bulgaria against high fuel prices. Others joined them with grievances including low living standards, a contemplated increase of motor insurance and car tax, and the refusal of a deputy prime minister to come down over disparaging comments about mothers of disabled children.

In Sofia, protestors against high fuel prices blocked the city centre for several hours shouting "Mafia" and "Resign!". They warned the protests would continue.

People in the northeastern town of Silistra staged a peaceful protest against low living standards. The protestors handed out leaflets saying: "We want prices to reflect our living standards. They can do it, we will make them heed us!" Parents of children with disabilities joined the rally. More than 100 cars made their way across the town. The next rally is to take place on Tuesday.

Some 400 cars took part in a protest against high fuel prices and what was termed "the social murder of Bulgaria" in the southwestern town of Kyustendil. Cars, motorcycles and vans gathered near the village of Yabulkovo on the road linking Kyustendil and Sofia.

In Yambol, a fleet of more than 400 vehicles protested in the town's centre against the rise in fuel prices and plans to increase the tax on older cars and the price of motor third party liability insurance. LN/DD
