Bulgarian Foreign Minister:
North Macedonia Is Important
Strategic Ally in NATO

Sofia, February 25 (BTA) - Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva Monday met with Republic of North Macedonia's Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov, who is paying an official visit to Bulgaria. She told a joint news conference after the meeting that the quick ratification by the National Assembly of the NATO Accession Protocol of the Republic of North Macedonia is yet another example of how strong Bulgaria's support is and what an important strategic ally in NATO the Republic of North Macedonia is. She expressed the hope that the NATO Accession Protocol will have been ratified by all remaining Alliance member countries by NATO's London summit in December.

Zaharieva said that the signing of the bilateral Treaty of Friendship, Good-neighbourliness and Cooperation is just the beginning. Big progress has been made in the work of the joint commission on historical and educational matters set up under the Treaty, she noted. She also said that in early March the joint economic commission will hold a meeting in Skopje after a ten-year hiatus. "By building friendship based on the truth, let us make it so that even the strongest storm cannot destroy this friendship," she said.

Dimitrov noted the importance of the NATO Accession Protocol's ratification by the Bulgarian National Assembly. In his words, Bulgaria has helped and given strength to his country so that North Macedonia could start solving its problems. "We practically started a new chapter," he said.

All historical mistakes made between Bulgaria and North Macedonia should be corrected so that the bilateral relations can be put on a solid foundation, he also said. Active work is being done on improving the infrastructure between the two countries, he added. Dimitrov noted that there is very big potential for development of the bilateral economic relations.
