The documentary exhibition Melchior Wankowicz at Monte Cassino, dedicated to writer Melchior Wankowicz, will be opened at the Polish Institute in Sofia on May 19, organizers said on Wednesday.

“The exhibition is dedicated to the prominent writer, often referred to as the father of Polish reportage, and focuses on the work that is widely regarded as his greatest achievement - The Battle of Monte Cassino, a monumental three-volume reportage devoted to the heroes of the battle for the eponymous monastery. The exhibition features excerpts from Wankowicz's texts and essays by literary researchers. The illustrations are based on archival photographs from the Monte Cassino battlefield in 1944,” the team said.

On the same day, Krzysztof Lukaszewicz's Red Poppies will be screened at the institute with Bulgarian subtitles. It is the first Polish feature film about the victorious Battle of Monte Cassino during World War II, which was one of the key events of the Italian campaign and opened the way for the Allies to reach Rome.
