The Port of Sarafovo has been awarded a Blue Flag for 2025 - a distinction that comes as a result of Burgas Municipality's ongoing efforts to modernize the port in recent years. Among the latest upgrades is an unmanned marine fuel station, installed last autumn. The station allows payment by card or cash, making it more convenient for fishermen and boat owners.
Local residents and those working in the maritime sector share positive impressions of the improved infrastructure. Borislav Petrov, owner of a fishing boat, told BTA the upgraded mooring conditions and easy access to the fuel station have improved daily work much more convenient for fishermen. "These improvements make it easier for us to do our jobs. The port is great," he said.
Nadezhda Ivanova stressed that the area around the port is calm and well-maintained, creating a pleasant atmosphere for both tourists and locals. "I love walking here with my children. The improvements are noticeable. You can clearly see the care for the environment and public safety," she added.
In January, the waste management plan for the Port of Sarafovo was updated, as part of the municipality's broader strategy for sustainable environmental management. A new development project was also announced earlier this year, which includes the construction of pontoons for boat berths and the installation of photovoltaic systems.
The port accommodates up to 80 vessels. In addition to small fishing boats, it can accommodate vessels measuring up to 25 metres in length with a draft of no more than 2.30 metres. A covered workshop has been built near the slipway. The mooring areas are equipped with electricity and water supply columns. The entire port area is illuminated with energy-efficient LED lighting and monitored by 29 cameras and recording devices.
The Blue Flag is awarded by the international Blue Flag programme to candidates committed to sustainable management and the protection of the marine environment. Criteria include water quality, safety, environmental education and waste management.
BTA is presenting all 30 Bulgarian beaches and harbours awarded the Blue Flag by the international jury of the Programme in Copenhagen. This year sees the 30th anniversary of the first award for the country - the pilot Blue Flag was raised at Sunny Beach on July 4, 1995.
