Acting Prosecutor General of the Republic of Bulgaria Borislav Sarafov opened a seminar on the topic Investigation of Cybercrimes on Tuesday, with the participation of 25 Bulgarian and Spanish prosecutors and investigators, the press centre of the prosecutor's office said.

The event is taking place at the Courthouse in Sofia and is part of commitments under the Memorandum of Cooperation and Understanding signed in February this year between the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Office of the Prosecutor General of the Kingdom of Spain.

Borislav Sarafov welcomed the participants and said that in the conditions of digital transformation, cybercrimes are constantly growing and affect more and more aspects of the public, economic and personal lives of citizens.

“The prosecutor’s office plays a key role not only in the investigation and prosecution of perpetrators, but also in the establishment of preventive mechanisms and inter-institutional cooperation,” said the Bulgarian Prosecutor General. He added that in Spain, crimes committed in an online environment are growing by 300% per year, and the situation in Bulgaria is similar.

The seminar will be delivered by Spanish prosecutors specializing in countering cybercrime and judicial cooperation in criminal cases.

The event will examine the main challenges in the investigation of crypto-assets and cybercrime in Spain. The seminar will be moderated by Svetoslav Vassilev, Head of the Cybercrime Department at the National Investigation Service. The practices applied in Bulgaria in investigating cybercrime will be presented, as well as the problems that Bulgarian investigators most often face in uncovering this type of criminal activity.
