Sofia, March 7 (BTA) - Representatives of the News Agencies World Council (NACO) held a working meeting at the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) here on Thursday in connection with preparations for the forthcoming 6th News Agencies World Congress (NAWC). NACO President Clive Marshall, CEO of the Press Association (UK), presided over the meeting.

The 6th Congress will be hosted by BTA and will take place at Sofia's National Palace of Culture (NDK) between June 13 and 15, 2019. BTA is a founding member of NACO (established in Moscow in September 2004), and BTA Director General Maxim Minchev was elected NACO Secretary General in November 2016. The motto of the Congress will be "The Future of News".

This is expected to be the largest media event in Bulgarian history. It will be attended by the heads of over 120 leading news agencies on five continents, prominent journalists of the most influential global media, senior executives of Facebook, Google and Twitter, the publishers and editors-in-chief of "The New York Times", the BBC and CNN, delegations of government officials, business persons and intellectuals from over 100 countries.

The NAWC forums give world renowned figures a platform to put out important messages and share ideas reaching every corner of the world through the news agencies and the other quality media. The congresses provide host countries with a unique opportunity for self-promotion because of the sightseeing programme running parallel to the workshops on the agenda.

The congresses attract representatives of news agencies worldwide and of all regional media organizations. including the European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA), the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA), the Federation of Arab News Agencies (FANA) and the Latin American Union of News Agencies (ULAN). Media giants, like the Associated Press (US), Reuters (UK), TASS (Russia), Xinhua (China), ANSA (Italy), Agence France-Presse (France) and other media giants are represented at the Congress.

News Agencies World Congresses have been held triennially since 2004. The 1st NAWC took place in Moscow in September 2004 and was organized by the Russian News Agency TASS. The 2nd Congress was hosted by the Spanish Agencia EFE in October 2007. The 3rd NAWC was organized by the Argentine national news agency Telam in October 2010. The official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) hosted the 4th News Agencies World Congress in November 2013. The 5th Congress was held in the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, in November 2016, with the Azerbaijan State News Agency (AZERTAC) as host. LI/LG
