Distrust Independence
of Judiciary System

Brussels, April 26 (BTA) - A total of 58 per cent of Bulgarians distrust the independence of the judiciary system, 34 per cent have a positive attitude towards it, and 8 per cent cannot say, according to a report published Friday by the European Commission, the Bulgarian National Television said.

Bulgaria is followed by Slovakia and Croatia, where 60 per cent and 76 per cent of citizens respectively perceive the independence of courts and judges as very poor or fairly poor.

Citizens' opinions are part of the EU Justice Scoreboard 2019, which gives a comparative overview of the independence, quality and efficiency of justice systems in EU Member States. It provides national authorities with information to help them improve their justice systems.

Vera Jourova, Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality European Commissioner said: "The 2019 EU Justice Scoreboard comes at a time when challenges to the rule of law are mounting in some places in Europe. I am pleased to see that many countries continue to improve their judiciary. Sadly, some others are reversing the positive trends. There are still too many EU citizens who don't see their justice systems as independent and who are waiting too long for justice to be served."

Asked whether the monitoring of corruption combatting and justice in Bulgaria and Romania will cease before the end of the current EC term, Jourova said the trend is not so positive as to say the cooperation and verification mechanism can be stopped. Especially in Bulgaria, the perceived independence of the judiciary system is the third lowest in the EU according to Eurobarometer research, Jourova noted, and people still strongly distrust the judiciary system.

Jourova also said there are specific steps that need to be taken regarding the implementation of the requirements of the EC, especially those related to the sustainability and irreversibility of measures already taken. IG/TH
