Eurostat: Around
1.5 Million Bulgarians
Materially Deprived

Sofia, May 9 (BTA) - Around 1.5 million Bulgarians, which is close to 21 per cent of this country's population, were materially deprived in 2018, show data from a Eurostat analysis on the standard of living in the EU.

In 2018, 6.2 per cent of the population, or around 31 million people in the EU, were severely materially deprived. This means that they could not afford at least four of the following items, which are considered by most people to be desirable or necessary to lead an adequate life: pay their bills on time; keep their home adequately warm; face unexpected expenses; eat meat (or fish or the vegetarian equivalent) regularly; take a one week holiday away from home; a TV; a washing machine; a car; a telephone, Eurostat said.

Bulgaria, however, ranks first among the 28 Member States in terms of the biggest reduction of people living in deprivation - from 30 per cent in 2017 down to 21 per cent in 2018, which means that in just one year around 10 per cent of Bulgarians have improved their living standard. Just eight years ago, around 45 per cent of Bulgarians were living in material deprivation.

The highest share of materially deprived people in Bulgaria, close to 50 per cent of all, was registered in the 65-plus age group, followed by children under 16 - 38 per cent, Eurostat reported.

According to the National Statistical Institute, Bulgarians spent the largest share of their income on food - close to 30 per cent, followed by paying for housing - 18 per cent, social insurance contributions and taxes - 13 per cent. Bulgarians spent the least on leisure and vacation, as well as clothing and shoes - around 4 per cent each.

The bulk of Bulgarians' incomes is formed by wages - close to 55 per cent, followed by pensions - 28 per cent, and self-employment - around 7 per cent. IG/MY//
