Bulgarian athlete Bozhidar Saraboyukov became European long jump champion with a mark of 8.13 metres at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands on Friday. This is Saraboyukov's first big success at men's level. He finished fourth in Istanbul with 7.97m.

The gold medal is the 30th for Bulgaria at European Indoor Championships and first in men's athletics since 2000 when Petar Dachev secured a title in high jump and iliya Dzhivondov succeeded in the 400m short track in Ghent, Belgium. Bulgaria's last women's win came in 2019 when Radoslava Mavrodieva achieved a victory in the shot put competition in Glasgow.

Before his last attempt, the 20-year-old Bulgarian was sixth in the rankings. Italian Mattia Furlani was second and Spaniard Lester Lescay third as both reached the 8.12 mark.
