Sofia, June 3 (BTA) - Commenting on recent intensive rains and the condition of rivers and major dams, Environment and Water Minister Neno Dimov told journalists on Monday that the current situation is gravest around Plovdiv, Southern Bulgaria.

This morning the special taskforce for prevention of accidents caused by water at the ministry has been alerted and the sources will be monitored constantly, Dimov said. Neither the rivers nor the dams are overflowing so far, and the latter can accommodate more water as planned.

The Minister said they communicate with the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences constantly to receive forecasts, for rains are also expected in Northwestern Bulgaria.

There are no problems with people or flooded houses in Veliko Turnovo (North Central Bulgaria).

Preventive action was launched even in March, when basin directorates were ordered to check the rivers after the winter season and issue relevant instructions to the mayors and regional governors to ensure their free flow.
