Sofia, July 5 (BTA) - In the first quarter of 2019, the employer persons aged 15 and over in Bulgaria totalled 3,147,800 (1,681,400 men and 1,466,400 women), the National Statistical Institute (NSI) reported on Friday. The share of employed persons in the total population aged 15 and over was 52.7 per cent (58.7 per cent for men and 47.2 per cent for women).

In the first quarter of 2019, 165,300 persons were unemployed (95,000 or 57.5 per cent men and 70,300 or 42.5 per cent women). The unemployment rate was 5.0 per cent, down by 0.7 percentage points from the first quarter of 2018. The unemployment rate was 5.3 per cent for men and 4.6 per cent for women.

According to preliminary data, the total hourly labour cost rose by 12.9 per cent in the first quarter of 2019 from the first quarter of 2018. The total hourly labour cost grew by 11.4 per cent in industry, by 13.1 per cent in services, and by 8.4 per cent in construction.

NSI business polls found that 34.9 per cent of the industrial enterprises pointed out the shortage of labour as a factor limiting their activity in June 2019.

In March 2019, the monthly average wage was 1,247 leva, or 5.3 per cent more than in February. Compared to March 2018, the increase was 12.6 per cent. RY/LG
