site.btaCC Co-Leader Petkov Says His Requested Immunity Means They're on Right Track

"This charge confirms to me that we are on the right track," Continue the Change (CC) co-leader Kiril Petkov said, referring to Monday's decision of acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov to ask Parliament to strip Petkov of his immunity as MP. The order follows a motion by the Sofia City Prosecution Office which is investigating Petkov's role in the March 2022 arrest of GERB leader and former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov.

"Yesterday [Monday], CC took a very principled decision and will not be influenced in any way by the slightly desperate actions of [MRF-New Beginning leader Delyan] Peevski through the Prosecutor General," Petkov said on Facebook. In his post Petkov points out three reasons why he believes he is now being indicted.

The first reason is the formation of the so-called sanitary cordon against Delyan Peevski. According to Petkov, Peevski sees that he actually has a chance through changing the law on the judiciary to lose his "bludgeon" Sarafov. "This is a loss of real power and he has to pretend to be scary. And in reality he is showing more and more weakness," Petkov said.

The second reason cited by Petkov is that Delyan Peevski is sending a signal to GERB not to betray him and that he still has influence over the prosecution service. "Peevski is lost if GERB throws him under the bus," he said.

The third reason he cites in his post is that acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov wants to divert public attention from the other big scandal - funds his family has been receiving regularly from a private company, information that was leaked by the anti-corruption civil movement BOEC.

Acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov requested the immunity of Kiril Petkov on Monday. Again on Facebook, Petkov said he would immediately give up his immunity.
