President Joins Mountain Rescuers' Expedition
to Deliver Materials for
New Mt. Pirin Shelter

Sofia, August 23 (BTA) - President Rumen Radev joined Thursday mountain rescuers, guides and volunteers on their expedition to deliver materials and equipment for a new high-mountain shelter at Koncheto Ridge in Mt. Pirin, said the President's Press Secretariat. In this way the President delivered on his promise to the Association of Mountain Guides in Bulgaria to personally go and see the new shelter in the highest part of Mt Pirin.

The route that the President and his company followed reaches an altitude of just under 3,000 m.

Radev is quoted by his Press Secretariat as saying that Bulgarian people should protect their mountains against all forms of violation, uncontrolled timber harvesting and poaching. "All of us must show zero tolerance to such acts," he said.

He also said that Bulgarian rescuers need state-of-the-art rescue equipment, including helicopters - just like their peers from many other European countries - to be able to respond adequately to alerts of emergencies and people in distress.

The President donated a first-aid kit for the new shelter.

He was joined on the expedition by the director of the Pirin National Park and the head of the Mountaineering and Climbing Department of the National Sport Academy in Sofia. LN/
