site.btaUPDATED If Bulgarians Could Vote for US President, 49% Would Support Donald Trump, 36% Kamala Harris - Gallup International Balkan
If Bulgarians could vote in the US presidential election, they would support Donald Trump, according to a poll by Gallup International Balkan on the occasion of the vote to be held on November 5 in the US. The election outcome will have a major impact globally, including on a number of social and political processes in the country, the polling agency said on Tuesday.
The poll was conducted in October 2024 among 40,888 adults from 43 countries worldwide. It is nationally representative with samples of about 1,000 people per country, Gallup International Balkan said.
If Bulgarians were to choose between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, some 49% would support Trump and 36% Harris, the data showed. A total of 15% of Bulgarian respondents did not indicate a preference.
Respondents, regardless of their personal leanings, shared similar attitudes about who would win the US vote, with 46% expecting Trump to win and 36% expecting Harris to win.
Meanwhile, 57% of Bulgarians said that the battle for the White House is important for Bulgaria and will have a significant economic and political impact. Some 12% said that the elections in the US will have no impact on Bulgaria, and 7% said that it will have a small impact.
In addition to higher support for Donald Trump, Bulgarians also have higher positive expectations of him, the pollsters add. For example, 34% expect Donald Trump's possible presidency to improve the position of the US in the world, while the share of citizens who declare such an expectation towards Kamala Harris is 25%.
Asked which of the two candidates will bring about more stability, 35% of Bulgarian respondents answered with Trump and 25% with Harris.
Some regional differences in Europe towards the candidates for the White House are also sparking interest, with socio-cultural, historical and ideological factors underlying them, the figures show.
Support for the liberal-progressive candidacy of Kamala Harris prevails in Western Europe, while Eastern Europe leans towards the candidate of the American conservative right, Donald Trump.
Support for Kamala Harris is the highest in Scandinavian countries, where left-wing, social-liberalism and the increased redistributive role of the state have traditionally defined the shape of the social and political model. As many as 85% of voters in Denmark, 82% in Finland, 81% in Sweden, 81% in Norway and 74% in the Netherlands would vote for Harris.
Conversely, in Eastern Europe, where the historic changes since the fall of the Berlin Wall have been associated with the dismantling of the totalitarian state and its inherent social levelling, there is higher support for the candidate of the American conservative right, Donald Trump. The strongest support for him is observed in Serbia - 59%, followed by Hungary - 49%, Bulgaria - 49% and Slovenia - 43%.
On a global scale, the picture is different, especially in terms of expectations of the eventual governance of each candidate.
Two in three people in the 43 countries covered by the survey think the impact of the US election on their country will be "very strong/high" - 67%. The poll also reveals that 38% share their expectation that Kamala Harris will improve the position of the US in the world, while only 19% associate such an expectation with Donald Trump.
If Harris were President, she could help increase stability, according to 32%, while a Trump administration would contribute to a decrease in global stability, say 49% of respondents. A clear majority of 59% in the 43 countries surveyed would advise the US President to direct more US resources to help Ukraine or at least keep them at current levels, Gallup International Balkan added.
