The first reconnaissance flight in combat conditions took place on October 16, 1912, during the First Balkan War, marking a historic milestone for both Bulgarian and European aviation.

The pilot, Lieutenant Radul Milkov, with Lieutenant Prodan Tarakchiev as observer flew a German biplane, Albatros F-2, over the Edirne fortress. They scouted enemy reserves and successfully dropped two hand grenades over the Karaagac station. This mission not only gathered critical intelligence but also marked the first recorded aerial bombardment in European combat history.

By decree of the Council of Ministers dated June 1, 1963, October 16 was officially designated as Aviation and Air Force Day.
