The first high-speed charging stations for electric vehicles, part of the "ESO Charge" project to create a national charging network, will be set up in Burgas, the Electricity System Operator (ESO) announced on Thursday.

Four charging points, capable of charging four vehicles simultaneously within minutes, will be installed at a publicly accessible location in the city.

For the parking spaces adjacent to the charging infrastructure, ESO will pay rent to the Burgas municipality.

This is the first charging station under the project by ESO's subsidiary, "ESO Charge," aimed at creating a national network of electric vehicle charging stations near the substations of Bulgaria's electricity system operator. The ESO project plans to build nearly 250 charging stations for electric vehicles powered by emission-free sources across the country within five years.

ESO manages 300 substations, providing the opportunity for the charging infrastructure to have a national reach. The goal is for the network of charging stations to serve electric vehicles and to establish hydrogen charging stations at key locations for public and heavy-duty transport.

The plan involves building 11 hydrogen charging stations at key border crossings between Bulgaria and Romania, Greece, Serbia, Turkey, and North Macedonia. Additionally, stations will be set up in the cities of Sofia, Plovdiv, Stara Zagora, Veliko Tarnovo, Varna, and Burgas, ESO said.
