Sofia Conference Takes
Stock of Wine
Making Sector

Sofia, November 22 (BTA) - Preliminary data show that 126,820,000 kg of grapes have been processed this year and approximately 90,820,000 l of wine have been produced, Deputy Agriculture, Food and Forestry Minister Lozana Vasileva said. She was speaking at Friday's national conference titled "Bulgarian Wine in the 21st Century" in Sofia.

Wine exports, which have remained at a stable level in recent years, are a matter of producer marketing. There is a demand for high quality Bulgarian wines on the markets in the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Brazil, Poland and China, among others. In 2018, Bulgaria exported nearly 64 million l of quality wine, mainly to Poland, Romania, Russia, the United States and China, Vasileva said.

Last year newly planted vineyards totalled 1,421 ha.

The government is applying successfully a National Programme in Support of the Viticulture Sector 2019-2023. With a budget of 133,810,000 euro, the programme includes measures for supporting growers including vineyard restructuring and conversion, promotion in third countries, harvest investment and investment in enterprises.

After revisions to the National Programme for 2019-2023, funding for popularizing of Bulgarian wine in third countries will be up to 80 per cent of permissible costs. National co-funding in the form of state aid for up to 30 per cent of permissible costs has been provided. The state aid complements the funding from the European Agricultural Guarantee Fund.

The Green Harvesting measure in the national programme is designed to address market crises and restore imbalances between supply and demand of wine grapes. The measure will be applied as of 2020 allowing wine producers who are affected by a market crisis, to remove unripe grapes from their vineyards, for which they will be entitled to state aid of up to 50 per cent of the sum of direct costs.

The number of wine producers in 2019 has increased to 282 from 268 in 2018, Vasileva added. NV/BR
