In the first half of 2024, a total of 166 women were killed in Turkiye, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said, quoted by local media.

In 2023, 308 women were killed in Turkiye. In the first six months of 2024, 166 women suffered the same tragic fate, Yerlikaya said while speaking before the parliamentary committee on gender equality earlier in July.

"We have never and will never accept violence in any form, especially against women. We believe that even one such case is completely unacceptable. We support every effort and initiative aimed at solving this serious problem," Yerlikaya said.

He reported that the number of police and gendarmerie units dealing with violence against women had been increased to 1,287.

Murder and violence against women remain a very serious problem in Turkiye. Every year, several hundred women are murdered by men who are their husbands, partners or relatives.

Amid this worrying trend, in 2021, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan withdrew Turkiye from the Council of Europe's Istanbul Convention, prompting strong reactions from women's rights groups and some Western countries. The Convention was signed in Istanbul in 2011.
