Sofia, February 14 (Lora Metanova of BTA) - Bulgarians are once again among the optimists regarding the future of the European Union, according to a Eurobarometer survey presented at the European Council Representation in Bulgaria on Friday.

One in two Bulgarians believe that the EU is heading in the right direction: a much higher percentage than the average in Europe, according to the results of the Eurobarometer survey conducted at the end of 2019.

The share of Bulgarians who identify as residents of the EU is on the rise (56 per cent), three percentage points higher than in the spring of 2019. The share of Bulgarians who have a positive attitude toward the EU has grown from 59 to 61 per cent, which is 19 percentage points above the EU average. Bulgaria is one of the three countries in Europe where the EU enjoys the most positive image, the other two being Ireland (63 per cent) and Portugal (59 per cent).

The majority of Bulgarians approve of the implementation of common European policies in the fields of security, trade, energy, defence and social work. Some 54 per cent of the respondents share the opinion that more decisions should be taken at the EU level.

On average, in Europe, the most important problems before the EU are environmental risks and climate change (36 per cent in EU member states), immigration into the EU (35 per cent) and the economic situation (17 per cent). According to Bulgarians, the most pressing issues before the EU are immigration (48 per cent), terrorism (32 per cent) and environmental risks and climate change (19 per cent).

On average, in Europe, the top priorities of the European Green Deal ought to be the development of sustainable energy sources, reducing plastic waste output and solving the problem with plastic products for single use. According to Bulgarian respondents, the Green Deal should focus on reducing plastic waste and guaranteeing fair pay for farmers, so they can provide affordable and healthy food for European citizens.

Seventy-six per cent of Bulgarians think that every new trade agreement signed by the EU should comply with the highest standards of climate, environment and labour protection. This share is close to the EU average of 80 per cent. /MT/
