Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) MP Nikolay Denkov said Thursday that the bad news related to the election of a new National Assembly chair is that the elected was the "fiercest defender of the person that is sanctioned under Magnitsky Act". He added the good news is that the election means the National Assembly can start operating.

"Raya Nazaryan recently made the following statement: the US is misled and for GERB the Magnitsky sanctions have no value", Denkov pointed out.

He said that CC-DB are the only political force left in the legislature that fights against corruption. "And we will continue to do so," he underlined.

Earlier in the day, GERB-UDF MP Nazaryan was elected National Assembly Chair with the support of her party, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) and There Is Such a People.

A total of eleven Bulgarians are sanctioned by the US Treasury under the Magnitsky act, most famously - one of MRF's two leaders, Delyan Peevski. The former business owner and media mogul is described by the US Treasury Department as an oligarch who has regularly engaged in corruption, using influence peddling and bribes to protect himself from public scrutiny and exert control over key institutions and sectors in Bulgarian society. He has denied any wrongdoing and is challenging the designation in a US court.
