The greatest wealth of Bulgaria are its people, said here on Tuesday the President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), Acad. Julian Revalski. He is part of the delegation to the 19th World Meeting of Bulgarian Media, organized by BTA. This year's forum will take place between 18 and 21 June in three cities in Ukraine - Odesa, Bolhrad and Izmail, where there are large Bulgarian communities.

On the way to Odesa, the Bulgarian delegation stopped in Braila to commemorate the 155th anniversary of the founding in the city of the oldest institution of modern Bulgaria - the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, established under the name of the Bulgarian Literary Society in 1869, even before Bulgaria's liberation from Ottoman rule, in a house on the site where the Church of the Ascension of Christ, known as the Bulgarian Church, was built, which Revalski described as significant.

In this place was the house of Varvara Hadzhi Veleva, who was a bright Bulgarian woman and gave her house for the founding meeting for the establishment of the Bulgarian Literary Society, explained Acad. Revalski. For that time it was a great achievement, because you can imagine a nation that had no state waking up and its brightest minds creating the Bulgarian Literary Society as one of the key elements of the Bulgarian Revival, he added. He said they were aware of the importance of the language, history, culture and roots of the Bulgarians.

In the founding statute [of the Bulgarian Literary Society] it is written that the main goal is to spread enlightenment among all Bulgarian people and to place them alongside other nations, said Acad. Revalski.

"I am very grateful that BTA, Bulgarian National Radio and Bulgarian National TV, taking an almost decade-long journey to celebrate the 1,350th anniversary of Bulgaria and "14 centuries of Bulgaria in Europe", included our anniversary as one of the first to be commemorated, together with the 200th anniversary of the Fish Primer. In this way you show the importance of our institution and I hope that you will also suggest to those on whom the future of Bulgaria depends, where to concentrate their attention, and that is education, science and culture, on which our whole country depends," said the President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

Acad. Revalski pointed out to the Mayor of Braila that a warm feeling arises among his colleagues when "Braila" is mentioned, because in the years when there was no Bulgaria, the city was given the opportunity to develop a Bulgarian diaspora and to come up with the idea of establishing the Bulgarian Literary Society - the predecessor of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

Earlier in the day, the Bulgarian delegation honoured the work of Bulgarian revolutionary Hristo Botev in Braila.

The Bulgarian delegation includes BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, BTA Deputy Director General Evgenia Drumeva, Bulgarian National Radio Director General Milen Mitev, head of the Council for Electronic Media Gabriela Naplatanova, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences President Acad. Julian Revalski, Rector of Sofia University Prof. Georgi Valchev, as well as representatives of Bulgarian media and Bulgarian-language media from different countries around the world.
