Bulgaria's highest ranked female tennis player Viktoriya Tomova recorded a 6-4 7-6(5) win over former Australian Open champion and former world No. 4 Sofia Kenin in the first round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells.
After a difficult start of the match and a 0-2 deficit, the Bulgarian managed to take control over the play. Kenin was close to a comeback of her own in the second set after turning a 2-5 score into 6-5 but Tomova stopped her streak in time to close the match.
In the second round she will meet another former No. 4 in the rankings - French player Caroline Garcia.
